AYRTON, Michael. VERLAINE, Paul. CIRCLE PRESS. ~ Femmes/Hombres.
London privately printed for subscribers by Douglas Cleverdon 1972
No. 27 of 85 copies of a total edition of 100. 15 etchings by Michael Ayrton printed by Studio prints. Poems printed by the Circle Press in Monotype Bembo on Barcham Green mould made paper. 40 x 29 cms. Oblong 4to., original green morocco backed marbled paper covered boards, lettering in gilt on the spine, housed in the original cloth slipcase. Slipcase with a little fading and marking, otherwise a very good copy with the original prospectus and the later letterpress printed apology which corrects the details in the prospectus and reduces the edition size.
As Douglas Cleverdon writes in the prospectus "In this present edition of Femmes:Hombres the obsessive eroticism of the poems finds a corresponding power in the etchings of Michael Ayrton" Verlaine is depicted in each etching as your contemplates, examines or engages with the women or youths, including Rimbaud, who are his partners." The poems are little known as, because of their nature, they are not in any of the standard "complete" works of Verlaine. From the collection of Ron King of the Circle Press, the printer of the book.
