Grapes growing in the US - photographic slides
CALIFORNIAN AGRICULTURE. SLIDES OF GRAPE VARIETIES. c1900 ~
Federal Board of Agriculture c.1900
64 original slides many of which are coloured. 35 of the images are of different grape varieties, the remainder show images of pollination, grafting techniques, agricultural machinery and farm buildings as well as cherries, pears and livestock.
Around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries the Federal Board of Agriculture in the US had a train which travelled round the railroads to educate farmers about different produce they could grow. The train had a carriage specially set up to show slides. Here we have some of the grape show which was used in California where the government wanted to encourage grape production, both wine grapes and eating grapes. Among the 35 images of different grape varieties are Tokay, Malaga, Muscat, Niagara, Champeau, Telegraph, Black Hamburg, Moore's Early, Green Hungarian, Sultana, Emperor, Rose of Peru, Woodruff Red, Caladoc and Campbell Early.
