With an extra suite of 53 woodcuts
MAILLOL, Aristide. LONGUS. ~ Daphnis and Chloe.
London A. Zwemmer, printed in Paris, December 7th 1937
52 wood engravings plus four decorated wood-engraved initials printed in green by Maillol. Printed on hand-made paper by Philippe Gonin on his Paris hand-press. One of 250 copies, this no.13, signed by the artist in pencil at the end "Maillol". 8vo., original full vellum, spine lettered in gilt, uncut, a very good, crisp copy, together with a suite of 53 woodcuts by Maillol housed in the original vellum backed boards with 'Woodcuts' in gilt on the bottom of the spine. With the original very worn slipcase lacking top edge. Some light spotting throughout as is common with this book, particularly to the boards of the additional suite.
Translated into English from the original Greek by George Thornley. A stunning achievement being a perfect match of paper, printing and illustrations, all presenting an earthy freshness. Maillol found a freedom and excitement in the story of innocent sensuality which inspired him to produce some really fine wood-cuts.
