Astonishing library diorama made for Philip Smith
PHILIP SMITH. NORWOOD, Mary. ~ Philip Smith Library Diorama made by Mary Norwood.
Miniature library made for Philip Smith constructed of wood and showing three floors of a library with shelves on three sides lined with tiny books, documents and rolls of paper. Also with a table on the ground floor stacked with volumes and papers with wooden doors and ladders giving access to balustraded first and second floors. 58 cms x 28.5cms with a protective perspex cover.
The library was custom-made for Philip Smith and Mary Norwood has included a miniature painting of Dante reading (after the painting by Luca Signorelli) which referred to a work Smith did with the artist Tom Philips and books related to his many interests on subjects such as Sufism, art and design, liberature and philosophy. A lovely touch is a book open on the table revealing an image of a Philip Smith book wall. Norwood writes "the 'books' are made individually but all glued into place. Nothing is meant to move!" From the studio of Philip Smith.
