Inscribed to Ron King by the binder
SMITH, Philip. ~ New Directions in Bookbinding.
London Studio Vista 1974
First edition. 109 illustrations, a few in colour all bar 1 being by Philip Smith himself. 4to., original brown laminated boards with design in silver on upper cover, in the original dust jacket. Jacket very slightly creased at edges and a tiny bit darkened but generally an extremely good inscribed copy.
The inscription reads "for Ron King from Philip Smith, Guildford, 1 Feb 1979". The book presents bookbinding as an exciting canvas for the creative artist, encouraging the jobbing binder to become more creative. He gives details of some of his most famous techniques - feathered onlays, maril and the book wall - as well as illustrating modern bindings by many other binders etc. A pioneering work.
