Printed in collotype on Atlas mould-made paper by Balston. 4to., bound by Zaehnsdorf in full gloss morocco with image from the book blocked in gilt on the upper cover, together with an essay by George Painter: An introduction on the Dream, the Dreamer, the Artist and the Printer, pp. 24, in the original black stiff wrappers with the same design blocked in gilt on the upper cover. Housed together in the original rather rubbed and worn black slipcase with labels on both sides. Spines rubbed, otherwise good.
One of the most celebrated incunables, Colonna’s Hypnertomachia Poliphili was printed in Venice by Aldus Manutius in his recut Bembo type with 172 remarkable woodcuts throughout the work. George Painter was the Assistant Keeper in charge of Incunabula at the British Museum and inserted in the book is a tls from him about the possible identity of the artist behind the remarkable woodcuts in the Hypnerotomachia.
