Belonged to the 5th Duke of Buccleuch whose father had been a close friend and patron of Scott (he dedicated ‘Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border’ to him). Scott's land abutted the Buccleuch estate and when the 4th Duke died, Scott became responsible for overseeing the education of his friend's son, the 5th Duke, who owned this copy. Scott wrote of him ‘the little Buccleuch turns out a goodly youth with fine points of sense and generosity about him. A better selected course of reading..will do much for him’.
The book has six ownership inscriptions of the Duke (Duke of Buccleuch, Langholm Lodge) to front boards and pastedowns.
