ERAGNY PRESS. RONSARD, Pierre de. ~ Abrege de L'Art Poetique. [Summary of the Art of Poetry]
Wood engraved title page, two borders, headpieces, tailpieces and initial letters designed by Lucien Pissarro and engraved by Lucien and Esther Pissarro. One of 226 copies printed in Vale type on Arches paper with the Eragny watermark. 8vo., quarter bound in pale grey paper with title in gilt on upper left corner, hawthorn blossom pattern patterned paper covered boards. Spine darkened and a little chipped, the usual browning to the free endpapers, otherwise a good copy.
Pissarro clearly admired Ronsard, the sixteenth century French poet and, as if to honour him, in this second Ronsard Eragny printing, Pissarro starts to be more imaginative with the book design, setting out the text more generously and adding more ornamental letters, head pieces and tailpieces.
With the Kelmscott Press printed booklabel of the collector and Arts & Crafts patron Laurence Hodson who co-founded the Essex House Press with C.R. Ashbee.
