GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS. O'CONNOR, John. ~ Together and Alone. Two Short Novels by Christopher Whitfield.
London
Golden Cockerel Press
1945
10 wood engravings by John O’Connor. No. 353 of 500 copies. Printed in Blado Italic type on mouldmade paper. 8vo., original white canvas backed marbled cloth boards, gilt lettering on spine. Spine a little dusty, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
Christopher Sandford wrote that he was heavily under the influence of the Nonesuch Press when he decided to print this book which was ‘largely experimental’. He writes “Christopher Whitfield is a sensitive writer, who at his best is incomparable in his wistful appeal” and that “the engravings by John O’Connor delightfully continue the conceptions of his former master, Eric Ravilious...these engravings were made in arctic cold in a Nissen hut, in the intervals between operational flights”.
