A rather accomplished set of photographs of tableaux recreating works of art of the late Victorian era

~ Photographic recreations of famous works of art.

c.1910

14 original silver gelatin photographs of tableaux recreating famous works of art. all mounted onto brown handmade paper on rectos only with a drawn border in white, on the opposite pages are the titles of the paintings being depicted written out in white. 15.8 x 12.5 cm. Sm. 8vo., tipped into a handmade binding presumably by the amateur photographer of thin purposefully aged wrappers with hand drawn decorated initials (apparently A.K.W.) in the centre with a border with painted flowers and leaves in each corner. Slight chipping to edges but otherwise good.

A rather splendid collection of photographs of tableaux recreating famous works of Victorian art including Millais’ Bubbles, Dante’s Dream and The Borgia Family by Rossetti, Lady Hamilton Spinning by Romney, The Last Watch of Hero by Leighton, Alleluia and The Culprit by T.C. Gotch and When Did you Last See Your Father? and Prince Arthur and Hubert by William Frederick Yeames, Mistress Mine Where Are you Roaming? by Edwin Austin Abbey, Battledore, possibly based on the 1906 painting by Leonard Campbell Taylor and Contrary Winds by Webster. I have been unable to locate the source of A Fairy Story which has a Lewis Carroll look about it (three girls in white dresses listening to a story) or one entitled Mischief Brewing.
