FRENCH, Annie. ~ ‘The Birdcage’.
Watercolour and ink on paper depicting a woman watching a bird fly free from its cage out of an open window, mounted onto asecond sheet with decorative borders in ink by the artist. 14 x 10cm. Mounted in a gilt frame (31 x 28cm overall). Exhibtion label on the verso - being exhibited in a group show termed “Small Drawings done mostly when Listening to the Radio”. Condition is very good, with bright and vibrant colours.
A lovely image by Annie French (1872-1965) who was an important Scottish painter, engraver, illustrator and designer and one of the so called ‘Glasgow Girls’ having studied at the Glasgow School of Art. She later shared the Glasgow Studio on West George Street with artists Bessie Innes Young and Jane Younger between 1906 and 1914. Alongside her contemporary Jessie M. King she became one of the best known of women artists and designers who began the ‘Glasgow Style’, exhibiting at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London, amongst other important venues.
