Coat of Arms painted onto vellum, glazed and in a presentation roan covered velvet lined box with the original clasps and a hook for wall hanging on the back, hinged at the side and the top. Coat of arms 17.5 x 12 cm, box 19. 5 x 14.5 cm. The bottom of the box has been repaired in the past but generally in very good condition.

This was how a Coat of Arms was presented by the Heralds to the recipient for them to show, along with a Grant of Arms which also had a watercolour of the arms. Richard Thomas Farren was granted arms in 1860 by Sir Charles George Young, herald and Garter Principal King of Arms and Robert Laurie, herald, Clarenceux King of Arms.
General Sir Richard Farren (1817-1909) was a British Army officer who commanded the 47th Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War and later became who became General Officer Commanding Eastern District and then in the West Indies in 1875.
