In 1932, book tokens were launched by the National Book Council explaining that the token “enables you to show courtesy, esteem, affection, appreciation or gratitude by means of a gift...with which the recipient is bound to be pleased”.
This is from 1943 or thereabouts as from that date Book Tokens Ltd was formed by the Booksellers Association and the tokens have consecutive design numbers and artist accreditation. This is only no. 11.
