A Hollywood star turns printer - one of only 20 copies

~ Writing a Poem about Flying a Kite

[Los Angeles] Imprenta Glorias 1987

No.1 of only 20 copies, signed by the artist. A poem by Stuart in four versions, printed in Eve Italic (or Koch Antiqua, or Locarno) on blue Fabriano Text, with Gampi Torinoko paper for the pearly moon. 2 cut out illustrated pages bu Stuart with silver paper behind them, silver printed title in the shape of a kite. 8vo., bound in French marbled paper wrappers, sewn with two blue shells at the thread ends, printed paper label on upper cover. A very good copy.

An errata on gampi paper with cut out sheet with birds before it, states “I started writing a poem about flying a kite whilst walking along the beach at Santa Monica in a blustery wind. The title is wrong. It should read “Writing a Poem about a kite flying”. Apologies!
The imprint of Gloria Stuart, possibly best known for her role as the elderly Rose in the film Titanic. She began printing late in life, buying a Vandercook proof press and accumulating type including Bruce Rogers’ Centaur type and Frederick Warde’s Arrighi type. She was most enamoured by Rudolf Koch’s Antiqua of which she acquired an almost complete range. She began printing broadsides but soon moved onto books, her first being Enishi. In Matrix vol. 8 Ward Ritchie describes her books as “ingenious in their concept and each one quite different”.
