No. 10 of 60 special copies (the total edition was 325 copies plus 6 on vellum), signed by the author. 4 large wood engravings plus a wood engraved title page border and cockerel on the colophon by John Nash, with an extra suite of the 4 plates on japon, all signed by the artist. Large 8vo., original full green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine lettered in gilt with a gilt Golden Cockerel device at the bottom of the spine, top edge gilt, others uncut, gilt border on edges and on turn-ins, extra plates in a limp card slipcase. Spine slightly darkened, otherwise a very good copy.

John Nash was the younger brother of Paul Nash whose main fame was as a wood engraver and illustrator, particularly of botancial books. Here we have a fine example of his talent.
H.E. Bates (1905-1974) was a very popular British novelist and short story writer, best known for Fair Stood the Wind for France and The Darling Buds of May. His work was embued with the English countryside and he adored flowers and gardening which informed so much of his work. This collaboration with John Nash is highly successful.
