~ The Reading Maid.

Burslem, Staffordshire c.1820

Staffordshire pottery pearlware glazed figure of a young woman reading a book beneath an oak tree, sitting on a grassy mound. 26 cm high. Expert restoration to a very small crack at the back of teh base, otherwise in a very good, bright condition.

An early 19th century Staffordshire pottery figure attributed to the leading Staffordshire potter Obadiah Sherrat due to the turquoise colour and oak leaf bocage. Made in Regency England at a time when female readership was booming and women were increasingly part of the literary world as writers and readers. The subject of the ‘reading maid’ became a popular one, with a number of different versions of the subject being made during the period.
A very good and attractive example.
