GILL, Eric. [GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS]. ~ Troilus and Criseyde: Evan Gill’s album of proof and editioned wood engravings for the book.
Collection of 64 original wood engravings on various handmade papers, printed from the block on 37 sheets for ‘Troilus and Criseyde’ comprising 31 sheets signed and numbered by Eric Gill all from editions of only 10; 2 inscribed ‘proofs’ (with ‘proof’ written by Gill) and 3 unsigned and unnumbered proofs, plus 2 unused wood engraved borders on one sheet, signed and numbered by Gill. The margin of each page has a pencil note of Gill’s reference numbers and the relevant page the engraving/s appeared in the book. All inserted loose in a specially made folio album, 33 x 28 cm, niger backed cloth with ‘Eric Gill: Engravings’ in gilt on the spine, spine spotted but otherwise good, the front free endpaper has inscribed in pencil ‘Evan Gill collection’.
A superb set of wood engraved prints from the first, and rarest, of Eric Gill’s major works he put together with Robert Gibbings for the Golden Cockerel Press. It was published in 1927 in only 225 copies. The editioned prints we have here are all in superb condition and were the one’s given by the artist to Evan Gill, the artist’s brother and bibliographer.
The collection includes an near complete set of the wood engravings used in the book including all the full-page engravings as well as an almost all the elaborate border decorations - only 6 borders which are in the book are not in the album. We also have a numbered and signed proof of two of the borders which were not used in the book. A remarkable collection of original signed prints.
