FORE-EDGE PAINTING. BALFOUR, Clara L, editor. ~ A Whisper to a Newly Married Pair from a Widowed Wife.
London
printed for Houlston and Stoneman
1850
Eighth edition. Engraved frontispiece of a perfect mother with 2 young children. Pp. viii, 183. 16.5 x 10.7 cm. 8vo., contemporary tan russia, elaborately stamped in gilt on both sides, spine in compartments with raised bands, wach panel with a detailed design, second panel lettered in gilt, all edges gilt with an erotic image of a young couple in bed on the fore-edge. Darkening and a little rubbing to the spine and edges.
The fore-edge painting was probably done in the second half of the 20th century and compliments the subject matter of the book perfectly, if rather graphically.
The book seems to be the usual plea for decorum and modesty from the wife and the joys of subservience to her husband and making a comfortable home.
