A very fine copy of the Deluxe edition of the first Dutch translation of William Morris’s lecture “Art and Society’ with a biography of the author, making his ideas accessible to a new audience in an extremely relevant way with beautiful design, typography, letterpress printing and engraving by S.H. de Roos (1877-1962) reflecting Morris’s ideals.
Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos was a Dutch lithographer, draughtsman and designer of decorative cake tins before this work which was a turning point in his career. After this he was commissioned to design the 1906 edition of the Printers’ Annual and worked for the ‘Lettergieterij Amsterdam’ type foundry for 35 years, producing numerous successful designs for type faces.
The book itself has an interesting history. Although 200 copies of this special edition were printed by Soep with the intention of binding them like this in full vellum, in fact less than 50 appeared like this. In 1905 the published Soep went bankrupt and his stock went to the Rotterdam publisher W.L. & J. Brusse including most of the unbound copies of this edition - which Brusse later bound in brown half cloth and printed boards, with the elegant prelims here.
