~ The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse of St. John.

1931

Original wood engraving by John Buckland Wright for a projected but unpublished edition of The Apocalypse of St. John. This is the third engraving in the series in the 11th and final state depicting the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
25.3 x 17.6 cms. Tipped into a black folder with a label on the upper cover from Harding and Giles who occasionally sold his other engravings in this format. 30 x 23.5 cms.

Some of John Buckland Wright’s most original, dramatic and large-scale engravings were made by John Buckland Wright after he had read D.H. Lawrence’s Apocalypse. He produced 5 plates and they were for The Apocalypse of St. John which A.A.M. Stols intended to publish in Dutch in 1933. The project was never completed, in the end just one print was exhibited by A.A.M. Stols at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and two at the posthumous J.B.W. Crafts Centre Exhibition in 1957.
Very rare.
