~ Post-publication inserted note for Laudes Beatae Mariae Virginis, Dec. 28th, 1896

Hammersmith Kelmscott Press 1896

1pp. printed on recto only in Chaucer type on Batchelor Perch paper. Printed in 300 copies, most are in the 260 copies of the book. 14.4 x 21 cm, untrimmed. A little spotting.

Distributed to subscribers after the book’s publication, this post-publication notice responds to The Rev. E.S. Derwick who communicated with the Press about a Tergernsee edition of these poems printed in 1579. The notice declares that this text is in the main “inferior to that printed by William Morris”. The authorship of the 1579 volume is ascribed to Stephen Langton which “is doubly interesting as the manuscript transcribed for the Kelmscott Press was probably written before his death in 1228”. Morris took his text from an early 13th century psalter he bought in 1893 believing his printing to be the first.
