BUCKLAND WRIGHT, John. ~ Original sketch book entitled ‘Figure’.
Original sketchbook dated 1.1.43 on the first page which denotes its start date, ie January 1943. An extremely dense sketch book with numerous nude drawings filling 49 pages executed in pencil, pencil and wash and occasionally with ink, many of the nudes are very highly finished and a few with outlines in colour gouache or pencil. 26 x 37 cms. Oblong folio, brown cloth. In very good condition.
Started on 3/1/43, there are numerous other dates in the book by the artist on drawings dating between 1943 and 1945. Every page or group of nudes bears a date in his hand. Buckland Wright was a prolific drawer and these are all brilliantly drawn nudes from life.
Each used page has several sketches on it with up to 17 on a page. The images are taken from every angle and in numerous different poses. Some are recognisable as being preliminary drawings for some of his wood engraving and metal prints. A wonderful and beautiful insight into the working practices of the artist.
