A charming vernacular embroidered binding with an ‘Egyptian’ joie de vivre

~ The Egyptian Struwwelpeter, being the Struwwelpeter Papyrus.

London H. Grevel & Son, printed in Bavaria [1896]

Printed throughout in colour “with full text and 100 original vignettes from the Vienna Papyri”on rectos only. 4to., in a charming contemporary embroidered binding on canvas affixed to the original boards, the needlework decoration on the upper cover is of Egyptian animals, flowers and trees in various coloured silks and the title embroidered in black on the upper cover. A few marks to canvas, a little shaken, otherwise in good condition.

Personal inscription dated 1896 from Auntie Di to Wilfrid.
The book is enormous fun and a good piece of German colour printing - the words are fabulous “Here is Thoth, the inky boy, Slinging ink his greatest joy”. The gruesome cautionary tales are illustrated as though written out on pieces of papyrus and include The Story of Cruel Psamtek; The Tragic Tale of Khufu and Tobacco; Of Sneferu, who waltzed not; The Story of Pyramid Thothmes and The Story of Flying Amenhotep.
