SAUMEREZ SMITH, Romilly, binder. DOLBY, Hazel, scribe. ~ Solomon’s Gold.
Extracts from the Old Testament, 1 Kings 10. 32 pages of calligraphy beautifully decorated in gold, terracota, ochre and other colours on variously coloured paper, all folding out from the centre. Bound as a triptych book structure sewn onto two gilded wooden rods with paper and leather flags attached with gold wire. Cream limp vellum covers fastened at the front with hand-dyed silk coards. Inside covers lined with gold leaf and the turn-ins fastened by bronze coloured thread. 1998.
A remarkable item both for the calligraphy and the binding. The feeling of the Old Testament text is conveyed perfectly with an ancient earthiness and richness to the viewer. The verses describe in detail all the riches of King Solomon “King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth”. This is the display he produced for the Queen of Sheba.
A beautiful object.
