Derrick Harris sustained the medium of wood engraving through the 1950s when it was struggling, admired by fellow artists, his suicide at the age of 40 affected many of them deeply including Edward Ardizzone who wrote “First he made a niche for himself as a good artist in an exacting craft, then as a dear friend whom we loved”.
