American statesman, private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and US Secretary of State, John Milton Hay’s private letters to Hannah Angell, the younger sister of Hay’s professor at Brown University. Hay and Angell’s correspondence began in May 1858, shortly after Hay’s departure from Providence, which continued until Hay’s death.
