~ Country Scenes: 1 & 2.

Riusbury, Herefordshire Whittington Press 2001

Two volumes. 24 wood engravings by Hellmuth Wesissenborn. Each volume one of 200 copies. Set in Goudy Modern type and printed on Rosa paper. 16mo.,bound by The Fine Bindery in original brown and olive Canson Ingres paper wrappers, each volume with one of Weissenborn’s wood engravings to upper cover. Housed in the original maroon paper slipcase, very slightly faded at one side. A lovely set.

Volume 1 is a calendar with an engraving for each month. Volume 2 is particularly moving and charming as the twelve engravings of English country scenes are illustrating particular lines of Rupert Brooke’s famous and profoundly moving poem ‘The Soldier’: “If I should die, think only this of me:/ That there’s some corner of a foreign field/That is forever England...”
The wood engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn were probably engraved in the 1940s after Weissenborn had left Germany in 1939.
