HOCKNEY, David. CAVAFY, C.P. ~ Fourteen Poems by C.P. Cavafy.
12 original etchings by David Hockney. No. 316 of 500 copies this being Edition B which was limited to 250 copies. Pp. 60. Folio, original full purple silk covered boards, original black slipcase. An extremely good copy.
From his days at the Royal College of Art, Hockney had admired Cavafy’s vivid evocations of homosexual desire and these delicate, intimate etchings celebrate that admiration in an atmosphere of relative new-found freedom after the 1966 passing of the act decriminalising homosexuality. He based the etchings on his friends in Notting Hill rather than according to the poems and it was decided which poems they would accompany after the event.
