BEARDSLEY, Aubrey. ~ Four illustrations to the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
One of only 10 copies. 4 illustrations by Beardsley for Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories printed on japanese vellum. Loose as issued in an extremely handsome vellum portfolio with a stunning Art Nouveau design by Frank Hazenplug on both sides, lined with linen.
In 1893 Stone and Kimball, publishers in Chicago, commissioned Beardsley to produce illustrations for the ‘Tales’ section of hte large paper version of Poe’s works. The four images he produced did not appear in the volumes themselves but in a separate undated portfolio “about which there is uncertainty regarding the number of copies produced”. It is thought that there were only ten sets.
The design of the portfolio by Frank Hazenplug mirrors the design on the 10 volume set of the Stone and Kimball edition of the Works of Edgar Allan Poe.
