BEWICK, Thomas. AESOP. ~ The Fables of Aesop, and others, with designs on wood by Thomas Bewick.
323 wood engravings by Thomas Bewick. First edition, one of 1000 copies on demy size paper, original blue paper covered boards with a more recent paper spine and printed spine label. A very good, uncut copy, the preservation of the original rather used but not unattractive boards is very successful and satisfying.
With the so-called ‘Thumb-Mark’ receipt of a printed Bewick thumb-mark and the facsimiles of signatures and seaweed stamped on it which were run off the press separately designed originally for subscribers. Tattersfield quotes this about the receipts - “We at first sent the Books without them, but as soon as it became known to the public this would not do...it has given us a great deal of unlooked-for-trouble...” as people didn’t feel their books were complete without them”.
This is one of the 1000 copies on demy size paper which it is claimed were the first to be issued and are identifiable by the devil tailpiece at the end of the introduction which does not appear in the 1000 on royal paper. A further 500 special copies were issued on special Imperial size paper.
