New edition, corrected and augmented with a frontispiece portrait of the author. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Daguerre plus 6 plates. Pp. iv (half-title, contents and title) 76. 8vo., original pink printed wrappers, untrimmed. Marking and light staining to wrappers with a few nicks to the edges, some damp staining to bottom corners of half title, portrait and title and light stain on other leaves but generally a pretty good copy.
This ‘new edition’ with the addition of the engraved portrait of Daguerre was printed by Felix Matteste et Cie and deposited with the Bibliographie de France on September 28th, 1839. The publication includes the manual of Daguerre’s process and the details of an act of June 15th 1839 granting pensions to Daguerre and Niepce, a report presented Chamber of Deputies in Paris by Arago on the 3rd of July and there was a further report to the Chambre des Pairs by Gay-Lussac on the 30th, all printed here. The plates were re-engraved for this issue and one figure was added.
A truly important photography work: "Perhaps no other invention ever captured the imagination of the public to such a degree and conquered the world with such lightening rapidity as the daguerreotype" - Gernsheim, The History of Photography.
