GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS. WEBB, Clifford. BANNET, Ivor. ~ The Amazons.
No. 40 of only 80 special copies, signed by the artist and author. 12 wood engravings by Clifford Webb and 3 maps in pen and ink by Mina Greenhill. Printed in Poliphilus type with Centaur initials on Arnold's mould-made paper. Large 4to., bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in original full brown morocco, with designs by Clifford Webb blocked in gilt on both covers, marbled endpapers, gilt lettering and cockerel on spine which is in compartments with raised bands, top edge gilt, others uncut, board edges tooled in gilt, turn-ins with single gilt fillet. Some very mild offset from turn-ins, darkening to extremities and some scuffing to the joints, otherwise a very good copy.
The text is an historical novel by Ivor Bannet about what Sandford calls "the true nature of the 'gentle' sex". Webb's engravings are vibrant and exciting as his black and white contrasts are far more marked than is usual.
